Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治暑濕泄瀉, 分水糓, 解煩熱. 澤瀉ㆍ白朮ㆍ猪苓ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ木通ㆍ茵蔯ㆍ瞿麥ㆍ車前子各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 入燈心一團, 麥門冬十粒, 同煎服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats summerheat damp diarrhoea, separating the water from the grain and resolving vexing heat. Alisma, white atractylodes, polyporus, red poria, akebia, artemisia capillaris, dianthus and plantago seed, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add one bundle of rush pith and ten grains of ophiopogon, and decoct together. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The most thoroughly diuretic formula in the chapter: eight water-movers, four of them (akebia, dianthus, plantago, rush pith) drawn from the urinary rather than the digestive pharmacy. The phrase to watch is separating the water from the grain, which is the tradition's standing account of what a watery stool is — fluid that should have left by the bladder leaving by the bowel instead. Redirecting it was the whole treatment, and in a patient already losing fluid it is the wrong direction; the ophiopogon at the end is the formula's one concession to that. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
