Translation

Treats damp diarrhoea with much water and no pain in the belly, the abdomen resounding with thunderous rumbling, and a fine pulse. Red poria, white atractylodes, polyporus, alisma, dioscorea, tangerine peel, atractylodes, stir-fried amomum, nutmeg roasted in dough and roasted chebula, 8 fun each; cassia bark and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add two slices of ginger, one plum and one bundle of rush pith, and decoct in water on an empty stomach. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indications are the diagnostic point: much water, no abdominal pain, loud borborygmus, a fine pulse. Painlessness is what separates this from the dysenteries, and a bowel full of fluid and gas with a weak pulse is a secretory diarrhoea rather than an inflammatory one. The formula is the Five Substances Powder — the standard water-moving quartet — with the spleen warmers and the astringent chebula and nutmeg added, so it moves the water out by the urine while binding the stool. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
