Clinical commentary 臨床

The alum and the soapberry are what mark this formula out: both are drugs for a phlegm that will not shift, and alum taken internally is an astringent and an expectorant in the old pharmacy. With fangji and mulberry root bark alongside, the formula is aimed at water in the lung as much as at phlegm, which fits the stated indication of a lung qi too weak to move its own fluid. **Contains pinellia, toxic in the raw state and to be properly processed, alum, which irritates the gut and is not taken internally now, and soapberry. This is recorded as history.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
