Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治喘嗽上氣. 枳殼一錢三分, 甘草一錢, 半夏ㆍ桔梗ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ靑皮ㆍ陳皮ㆍ蘇子ㆍ檳榔ㆍ葶藶子(炒) 各七分, 白豆蒄ㆍ木香ㆍ縮砂ㆍ紫蘇葉各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑五, 水煎服. 《直指》

Translation

Treats panting cough with qi rising. Bitter orange peel, 1 don 3 fun; licorice, 1 don; pinellia, platycodon, red poria, unripe tangerine peel, tangerine peel, perilla seed, areca and dry-fried lepidium seed, 7 fun each; round cardamom, costus, cardamom and perilla leaf, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger and decoct in water. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Almost every drug here moves qi downward or sideways — bitter orange, areca, costus, the two cardamoms, the two tangerine peels — with lepidium seed for the water and pinellia for the phlegm. It is a qi formula with a cough indication rather than a lung formula, and the Jijibang is consistent in treating a wheeze that comes with bloating and fullness as a problem of qi stagnation in the middle. **Contains pinellia, toxic in the raw state and to be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
