Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治崩漏, 面黃腹痛. 黃芩ㆍ黃連ㆍ黃柏ㆍ梔子ㆍ生乾地黃ㆍ當歸ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ川芎各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《入門》此方, 乃黃連解毒湯, 與四物湯合劑也.

Translation

Treats flooding and spotting with a yellow complexion and abdominal pain. Scutellaria, coptis, phellodendron, gardenia, dried fresh rehmannia, angelica, white peony and chuanxiong 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. This formula is Coptis Resolve Toxin Decoction combined with Four Substances Decoction. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The source names its own construction — Hwangnyeonhaedok-tang joined to Samul-tang — and the two halves answer the two signs. The three yellows and gardenia clear the heat driving the bleeding; Samul-tang replaces what has been lost. 面黃 in a woman who is flooding is anaemia, and the chapter reads it as the reason the formula must nourish as well as clear.
