Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治崩漏太多, 昏冒不省, 瞑目無所知覺, 盖因血暴亡也. 血去則心神無所養, 暴損氣血, 養血, 生血, 益陽, 以補手足厥陰之不足. 白芍藥ㆍ升麻各一錢, 防風ㆍ羌活ㆍ獨活ㆍ柴胡ㆍ當歸身ㆍ葛根ㆍ甘草各七分, 藁本ㆍ川芎各五分, 生地黃ㆍ熟地黃各四分, 蔓荊子ㆍ細辛各三分, 紅花一分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats flooding and spotting so profuse that there is clouding and loss of awareness, the eyes closed and no perception — this being because the blood has suddenly been lost. The blood gone, the heart spirit has nothing to nourish it; qi and blood are suddenly damaged. Nourish the blood, engender the blood and boost the yang, so as to supplement what is insufficient in the reverting yin of hand and foot. White peony and cimicifuga 1 don each; saposhnikovia, notopterygium, pubescent angelica, bupleurum, angelica body, pueraria and licorice 7 pun each; ligusticum and chuanxiong 5 pun each; fresh rehmannia and cooked rehmannia 4 pun each; vitex and asarum 3 pun each; safflower 1 pun. The indication describes a woman who has collapsed from haemorrhage, and the formula's answer is Dongwon's rather than the obvious one: six acrid raising medicinals — cimicifuga, saposhnikovia, notopterygium, pubescent angelica, bupleurum, pueraria — against only four that nourish blood. The reasoning is stated: the blood is gone and cannot be replaced fast enough, so the yang is raised to hold what remains. Safflower at a single pun in a formula for haemorrhage looks contradictory until read as a directional marker, as at Changchulbokjeon-san in the Dampness chapter. **This describes haemorrhagic shock.
