Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治穀脹, 朝食則不能暮食, 又治氣脹水脹及蠱脹. 雞矢白(乾者)ㆍ大黃ㆍ桃仁各等分. 右爲末, 每二錢, 薑湯調服. 《宣明》一方, 羯雞屎一升炒黃色, 細末, 百沸湯三升淋汁, 每取一大盞, 調木香ㆍ檳榔末各一錢, 空心服, 以平爲期, 名曰雞矢醴飮. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats grain distension, in which food eaten in the morning cannot be eaten again at evening; it also treats qi distension, water distension and gu distension. Dried white chicken droppings, rhubarb and peach kernel in equal parts. Powder them and take 2 don at a time stirred into ginger decoction. Another method: one seung of castrated cock's droppings dry-fried to a yellow colour and finely powdered; pour 3 seung of boiling water through it and take the liquor. Take one large jan at a time, stirring in 1 don each of powdered costus and areca, on an empty stomach, continuing until the swelling is level. It is called Chicken Droppings Ale Drink. — Seonmyeongnon 宣明 (Donguibogam · Changman)

Clinical commentary 臨床

朝食則不能暮食 — food eaten in the morning cannot be eaten again at evening — is the definition of grain distension that the chapter gives at 3.4.3, and it is a good clinical description: the stomach does not empty between meals, so the next one cannot be taken. Chicken droppings is the Neijing's own remedy for drum distension, named in the Suwen, which is why it stands first in the section. The white portion is specified because that is the urate fraction, and the variant method leaches it with boiling water rather than using the powder whole. **Ingesting animal excreta carries a real infection risk and this should not be prepared.
