Translation

Treats wind stroke with deviation. Typhonium, silkworm and whole scorpion, all used raw, equal parts. Powder; 2 don each time, taken stirred into hot wine. — Danggye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three drugs, all raw, in hot wine, and it is the most famous formula for facial palsy in the entire literature — still the first thing taught for the condition and still in use. Its economy is the point: typhonium to reach the head, silkworm to settle wind in the channels, scorpion to extinguish wind and free what is bound, and alcohol to carry all three to the surface. The raw preparation is deliberate and makes it stronger and more toxic; scorpion is neurotoxic and typhonium irritant, and 2 don of this powder is not a casual dose. Of everything in the 口眼喎斜 section this is the one with real standing. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
