Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風中手足陽明經, 口眼喎斜. 升麻ㆍ葛根ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ人參ㆍ甘草各一錢半, 秦芃ㆍ白芷ㆍ防風ㆍ桂枝各七分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入連根葱白三莖, 水煎服, 食後. 《寶鑑》

Translation

Treats wind striking the hand and foot yangming channels with deviation of the mouth and eye. Cimicifuga, pueraria, white peony, ginseng and licorice, 1 don 5 fun each; gentiana macrophylla, angelica dahurica, saposhnikovia and cinnamon twig, 7 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three stalks of scallion white with the roots attached, decoct in water and take after food. — Dongwon Boggam 寶鑑 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A channel formula rather than a wind formula, and the diagnosis is the whole of it: the yangming channels run across the face, so facial deviation is wind lodged there. Cimicifuga and pueraria are the pair that lifts and releases from yangming, and they carry the full weight; gentiana macrophylla, angelica dahurica and saposhnikovia are the three that reach the face. For an idiopathic facial palsy of recent onset this is a mild and defensible prescription, and it is the one of the 口眼喎斜 group that a modern practitioner is most likely to recognize as continuous with current practice. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
