又方

Given in the source as 又方, an unnamed head standing at the end of the 結核 section, and entered here under a descriptive identifier taken from the section. It has nothing to do with the other unnamed 又方 head of this chapter in the 癭瘤 section, registered as yeongryu-ubang, nor with the 一方 entries of other chapters. The base text gathers five remedies from five sources under the one head and they are kept together, as the corpus does for the 齒衄又方 leaf. The transcription writes 合搗爛; the corpus prints 擣 in 80 places of source text against 54 and the majority form is given above. 萆麻子 is the castor seed, registered under that headword. The pieces, the three seeds and the quantities of wine and tea carry no weights.

Translation

Treats pimply nodules in the Shaoyang channel behind the neck, sometimes red, hard, swollen and painful. One piece of raw Chinese yam, peeled; three castor seeds, hulled. Grind the above together evenly and spread it on — marvellous. ○ For a lump on the neck that moves: powdered selfheal, 6 don; powdered licorice, 1 don. Mix evenly; one to two don to a dose, stirred into clear tea. ○ Another formula, for phlegm nodules and pimply lumps: pokeweed root and raw arisaema, pounded together to a pulp and smeared on — it goes down at once. ○ Another formula: arisaema and wild aconite in equal parts, powdered, mixed with ginger juice and smeared on — it goes down at once. ○ Also: a large spider ground to a pulp and steeped in good wine, the dregs discarded, taken warm at bedtime — most effective. — Haejang 海藏 · Dansim 丹心 · Jonghaeng 種杏 · Hoechun 回春 · Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five remedies for one complaint, and they do not agree with each other. Raw yam ground with castor seed is a cooling, drawing poultice of the kind used on a boil. Selfheal with a little licorice, taken in tea, is the one that is actually internal and the one the chapter trusts most — 夏枯草 is its standing drug for a neck lump and it appears again in the 癭瘤 section on its own. Pokeweed root with raw arisaema, and arisaema with wild aconite in ginger juice, are both counter-irritant pastes that promise 立消, instant resolution. The spider in wine at bedtime is sympathetic magic. What holds them together is the site: 項後少陽經, behind the neck in the Shaoyang territory, which is where the chapter locates nodes raised by heat in the gallbladder channel. 疙瘩 is a good word for what is meant, a pimply lump rather than a smooth gland. **Contains castor seed, whose toxin is lethal in very small amounts; pokeweed root, a drastic purgative and irritant; raw arisaema; and wild aconite, which is severely toxic and is absorbed through broken skin. The pastes in this leaf must not be prepared.** A red, hard, painful swelling on the nape is most often a furuncle or an infected node, and smearing an irritant on it will worsen it; it needs cleaning, and incision and antibiotics if it has pointed. A lump that moves and does not hurt is usually a lymph node, and if it persists it needs examination, not selfheal. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
