Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治子痢. 烏雞卵一箇, 傾出淸留黃, 黃丹一錢, 入雞子殼內攪勻, 厚紙糊口, 鹽泥固濟, 火煆, 硏爲末. 右每取二錢, 米飮調下, 一服愈者是男, 二服愈者是女. 《本事》

Translation

Treats child dysentery. One black-boned hen's egg, the white poured off and the yolk kept; minium 1 don put into the shell with the yolk and stirred even; the mouth pasted over with thick paper, sealed with salt clay, calcined in fire and ground to a powder. Take 2 don at a time stirred into rice broth; if one dose cures it the child is a boy, if two doses the child is a girl. — Bonsa 本事 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The egg is used as the crucible — yolk and minium sealed inside the shell with salt clay and fired. It is an alchemical method rather than a decoction. The sex prediction at the end is of a piece with 1.9, which gives four ways of telling a boy from a girl before birth. **Contains minium, which is lead tetroxide.
