Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治姙娠下痢赤白, 或泄瀉, 腹痛垂死者. 黑豆三十五粒, 鸎粟殼二兩(半生半炒), 甘草二兩(半生半炒). 右爲麄末, 都作一貼, 入薑三片, 同煎, 空心服, 神效. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats dysentery red and white in pregnancy, or diarrhoea with abdominal pain and the patient near death. Black soybean thirty-five; opium poppy capsule 2 nyang, half raw and half stir-fried; licorice 2 nyang, half raw and half stir-fried. Grind coarsely, make the whole into one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct together and take on an empty stomach, with spirit-like effect. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

半生半炒 for both the poppy capsule and the licorice — raw acts quickly, fried acts longer, and using both gives an effect that begins at once and continues. The same preparation appears for the morning glory seed throughout the Purging chapter. 垂死 — near death — names the case this is kept for, and the dose is large. **Opium poppy capsule contains morphine and codeine. It is a controlled substance, crosses the placenta, and causes neonatal respiratory depression and withdrawal. This must not be prepared or taken.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
