Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治男女一切重痢. 黃連ㆍ乾薑ㆍ當歸ㆍ阿膠珠各等分. 右三味爲末, 以醋煮阿膠令消化, 和丸梧子大, 每三五十丸, 米飮呑下, 甚妙. 《本事》

Translation

Treats every severe dysentery in man or woman. Coptis, dried ginger, tangkuei and beaded ass-hide glue, equal parts. Powder the first three, boil the ass-hide glue in vinegar until it dissolves, and with it bind pills the size of a paulownia seed; swallow thirty to fifty each time in rice water — most excellent. — Bonsabang 本事 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs, one each for heat, cold, blood movement and blood replacement, with the glue serving as the binder so that nothing is wasted. The name is grander than the formula and the formula is better than its name: for a severe dysentery it covers the infection, the cramping and the blood loss in four ingredients, and the last of the chapter's general formulas is also one of its plainest. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
