Translation

Treats toothache divinely. Realgar, frankincense, pepper, musk, long pepper, lesser galangal and asarum in equal parts, powdered; blow a little into the left nostril for a man and the right for a woman, and it stops at once. Where the toothache comes with swelling, roll the powder in paper to make a taper, dip it in sesame oil, light it and smoke the painful tooth; when the taper has burnt out the pain stops.

Clinical commentary 臨床

A medicated taper burnt at the tooth so the smoke reaches it. 4.17's worm-drawing method does the same with a lamp and a funnel of paper, and both are the ancestor of the smoking-out remedies that persisted into the nineteenth century. **Contains realgar, which is toxic; musk is CITES-listed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
