Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治痰盛咳喘, 吐膿血, 名曰肺痿. 甜梨汁ㆍ生蘿葍汁ㆍ生薑汁ㆍ白砂糖ㆍ欵冬花ㆍ桔梗ㆍ紫菀各二兩, 五味子一兩. 右共熬去滓成膏, 入人參末一兩, 和丸彈子大, 臨卧噙化一丸. 《回春》

Translation

Treats abundant phlegm with cough and panting and the spitting of pus and blood, which is called wilting lung. The juice of sweet pear, the juice of raw radish, ginger juice, white sugar, coltsfoot, platycodon and aster, 2 nyang each; schisandra, 1 nyang. Boil them down together, strain off the dregs to make a paste, work in 1 nyang of ginseng powder, and make pills the size of a bullet; at bedtime let one dissolve in the mouth. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A boiled fruit syrup made into a lozenge, and the form is the whole point: 噙化, held in the mouth and let dissolve, so that the sweetness and the moisture reach the throat slowly over a long time. Pear juice, radish juice and sugar give a demulcent base; coltsfoot, platycodon and aster are the expectorants; ginger and schisandra cut the phlegm and hold the cough. Taken at bedtime it is a cough linctus in all but name, and for a patient with a dry, purulent night cough it would have helped. Of everything in the 肺痿 group this is the formula whose mechanism a modern reader can accept without translation. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
