Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺痿證, 咳嗽有痰, 午後熱, 幷聲颯者. 柴胡二錢, 桑白皮一錢, 赤茯苓ㆍ五味子ㆍ貝母ㆍ杏仁ㆍ枳實ㆍ桔梗各七分, 人參ㆍ阿膠珠ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三棗二, 水煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats the pattern of wilting lung, with cough and phlegm, fever after midday, and a husky voice. Bupleurum, 2 don; mulberry root bark, 1 don; red poria, schisandra, fritillaria, apricot kernel, bitter orange and platycodon, 7 fun each; ginseng, ass-hide glue roasted to beads and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Bupleurum at twice the weight of anything else, for the one sign the formula is named by: 午後熱, fever that comes on after midday. Afternoon and evening fever in a wasting patient with purulent cough is what the tradition treats with bupleurum, and the rest of the formula — platycodon, fritillaria, apricot kernel, mulberry root bark — is the standard expectorating set. 聲颯, a husky or rasping voice, is listed with it, and 喘嗽聲嘶 at 3.13 gives the chapter's reading of hoarseness in a cough: 血虛受熱, blood vacuity taking on heat.
