Golden Flower Powder (Children's Formula)

Geumhwa-san

한글 금화산  ·  Pinyin Jin Hua San

金華散

A formula of this name is already registered from the Sores chapter, geumhwa-san, and the two are homonyms. That one is from the 丹心 and is built on 黃丹 一兩 with 黃栢ㆍ黃連 各五錢 and 輕粉 一錢, four drugs, for 一切濕熱惡瘡; this leaf is from the 入門, carries five drugs at 各三錢 plus 輕粉ㆍ麝香 各一錢, adds 大黃 and 黃芪 which the other does not have, omits nothing but the proportions, and is indicated for the eroding sores that follow smallpox. Different source, different drug list, different weights and a different indication, so this one takes the chapter tail. The transcription writes 為 for 爲, normalized here. 黃栢 is kept as transcribed, the corpus majority form. The lard is the vehicle in the ointment form and is entered with prep and no weight.

Translation

Minium, phellodendron, coptis, rhubarb and astragalus, 3 don of each; calomel and musk, 1 don of each. Make the above into a powder and dust it on dry, or work it up with lard and smear it on. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five yellow drugs at 3 don and two at 1 don. The name is for the colour: minium, phellodendron, coptis and rhubarb are all yellow or orange, and astragalus makes the fifth. The powder is used two ways, dry on a weeping sore or worked into lard as an ointment for a dry one. **Minium is lead tetroxide and calomel is mercurous chloride. This formula puts a lead compound and a mercury compound, together, onto the broken skin of a child — and 1.87.2's sores are by definition broken skin. Lead and mercury are both absorbed through damaged skin far more readily than through intact skin, both are cumulative, and in a child both injure the developing nervous system irreversibly. There is no safe dose of either at any age. This must not be prepared.** The mercury question is set out in full at jinsa-go-soa and is not repeated here. Musk is the preputial gland secretion of the musk deer and is CITES Appendix I; the demand this tradition created is why the musk deer are endangered. Of the seven drugs, the only one with a plausible local effect on an infected sore is phellodendron's berberine, and that is weak. Scabies is caused by a mite and is cured today by topical permethrin or oral ivermectin; ringworm is a fungus and is cured by an antifungal. Both were curable conditions that this formula could not cure, and it was being applied in a form that poisoned the child. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
