Flesh-Knitting Powder

Yeomgi-san

한글 염기산  ·  Pinyin Lian Ji San

斂肌散

The leaf gives no 治 clause; the indication stands in the section prose of 1.87.2, 痘癰膿血不收, 宜用斂肌散. The transcription writes 為 for 爲; the corpus prints 爲 in 1,322 places against three, and the normalized form is given. 黃栢 is kept as the transcription prints it, which is also the corpus majority. 斂 takes the initial-law reading at the head of a word, so the id reads yeomgi-san and not the ryeomgi-san the project's romanizer returns; the corpus applies the same rule at yeomsu-bang and yeomban-san. Translation

Coptis, phellodendron, wolfberry root bark, gallnut and liquorice, in equal parts. Make the above into a fine powder and dust it on dry. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs ground fine and dusted onto a sore. Coptis and phellodendron are the two bitter cold drugs the tradition reached for against any hot discharging lesion; gallnut is the astringent and is the one ingredient with a defensible local action, since its tannins do precipitate protein and dry a weeping surface; wolfberry root bark and liquorice fill out the formula. The target is an infected pox that will not heal. In a child weeks into smallpox, a lesion still running pus means either a persistent bacterial infection or a wound that cannot close because the child is depleted; neither is answered by a dusting powder. Modern management is systemic antibiotics for the infection, wound care, and nutrition. **This is an unsterilized powder laid on open skin in a child whose barrier has been destroyed over much of the body. Dry dusting powders on open wounds carry a real risk of bacterial contamination, and tetanus spores survive in plant material; the powder is more likely to have added to the infection than to have closed it.** The leaf gives no quantity at all — the drugs are in equal parts and the dose is whatever covers the sore. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
