Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

孕婦宜常服, 養血淸熱. 素慣半産者宜服, 以淸其源, 而無後患也. 黃芩ㆍ白朮ㆍ當歸ㆍ川芎ㆍ白芍藥各一兩. 右爲末, 每三錢, 溫酒調下, 或酒糊和丸, 米飮下五七十丸. 《入門》婦人有孕則碍脾, 運化遲而生濕, 濕而生熱. 古人用白朮ㆍ黃芩, 爲安胎之聖藥, 盖白朮補脾燥濕, 黃芩淸熱故也. 況姙娠賴血培養, 此方有當歸ㆍ川芎ㆍ芍藥以補血, 尤爲備也. 服此藥則易産, 所生男女兼無胎毒, 則痘疹亦稀, 無病易育, 而聰明智慧, 不假言矣. 累試累驗. 《丹心》

Translation

A pregnant woman should take it regularly; it nourishes blood and clears heat. One habitually given to miscarriage should take it, to clear the source and leave no later trouble. Scutellaria, white atractylodes, angelica, chuanxiong and white peony 1 nyang each. Powder them and take 3 don stirred into warm wine, or make pills with wine paste and take fifty to seventy with rice broth. When a woman is with child, the spleen is impeded; its moving and transforming is slow and damp is engendered, and damp engenders heat. The ancients used white atractylodes and scutellaria as the sagely medicines for quieting the foetus, because white atractylodes supplements the spleen and dries damp while scutellaria clears heat. Further, a pregnancy depends on blood to rear it, and this formula has angelica, chuanxiong and peony to supplement the blood — it is the more complete for it. Taking this medicine the birth is easy, and the child born is free of foetal toxin, so that pox and rash are also rare; it is free of illness and easily reared, and its brightness and wisdom need no saying.
