Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

凡婦人受胎, 經三月而墮者, 雖氣血不足, 乃中衝脉有傷. 中衝卽陽明胃脉, 供養胎孕. 至此時, 必須謹節飮食, 絶色慾, 戒惱怒, 服此藥, 庶免半産之患矣. 杜沖(薑汁炒)ㆍ白朮(土炒) 各二兩, 當歸(酒洗)ㆍ熟地黃(薑汁炒)ㆍ阿膠(蛤粉炒成珠)ㆍ條芩(炒)ㆍ益母草ㆍ續斷(酒洗)ㆍ香附米(以酒醋鹽水童便各浸一包, 經三日焙乾) 各一兩, 川芎ㆍ艾葉(醋煮)ㆍ陳皮 各五錢, 縮砂 二錢半. 右爲末, 以棗肉和丸梧子大, 每百丸, 空心, 米飮呑下. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Wherever a woman conceives and miscarries at the third month, though the qi and blood be insufficient, it is that the thoroughfare vessel has been damaged. The thoroughfare is the yang brightness stomach vessel, which supplies and nourishes the pregnancy. At this time she must carefully moderate food and drink, cut off sexual desire and guard against vexation and anger, and take this medicine — and she may then escape the trouble of miscarriage. Eucommia (ginger-juice fried) and white atractylodes (earth-fried) 2 nyang each; angelica (wine-washed), cooked rehmannia (ginger-juice fried), ass-hide glue (fried to beads with clam shell powder), slender scutellaria (stir-fried), motherwort, dipsacus (wine-washed) and cyperus (one packet each steeped in wine, vinegar, salt water and child's urine for three days, then dry-roasted) 1 nyang each; chuanxiong, mugwort leaf (vinegar-boiled) and tangerine peel 5 don each; amomum 2 don 5 pun. Powder them, bind with jujube flesh into pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take a hundred at a time on an empty stomach with rice broth. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three requirements are set beside the medicine — moderate the diet, abstain from intercourse, guard against anger — and the chapter says the formula alone will not do. 經三月而墮 — miscarrying at the third month — is treated as its own category, and Danxi's case at the end of this section explains why: the third month belongs to the ministerial fire, which is when a pregnancy is most readily lost. The cyperus is processed four ways, as in the Uterus chapter's Sajehyangbu-hwan at 13.9.7, and every other medicinal is fried or washed as well.
