Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

一婦人有孕, 至三月左右必墮. 予敎以濃煎白朮湯, 調黃芩末一錢, 服三四十貼, 遂得保全. 盖孕至三月, 正屬相火, 所以易墮. 不然, 何以黃芩白朮爲安胎妙藥耶. 《丹心》

Translation

A woman conceived and would always miscarry at around the third month. I taught her to decoct white atractylodes thick and stir 1 don of powdered scutellaria into it; after taking thirty or forty packets she carried to term. A pregnancy reaching the third month belongs precisely to the ministerial fire, and that is why it is readily lost. Were it not so, how should scutellaria and white atractylodes be the marvellous medicines for quieting the foetus? — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Danxi's own case, and it closes the section by arguing backwards from the treatment: if the third month is when ministerial fire is strongest, then a cold medicinal paired with a spleen supplement is exactly what is needed — and the fact that this pair is the standard remedy is itself evidence for the reading.
