Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治右半身不遂, 屬氣虛與濕痰. 白朮 一錢二分, 白茯苓ㆍ當歸(酒洗)ㆍ陳皮ㆍ赤芍藥ㆍ半夏ㆍ蒼朮ㆍ烏藥ㆍ枳殼ㆍ羌活ㆍ黃連ㆍ黃芩(並酒炒) 各一錢, 人參ㆍ川芎ㆍ桔梗ㆍ防風 各八分, 白芷 七分, 甘草(灸) 五分. 右剉, 分二貼, 入薑 五片, 水煎服. 《回春》

Translation

Treats paralysis of the right half of the body, which belongs to qi vacuity and damp phlegm. Atractylodes, 1 don 2 fun; poria, wine-washed tangkuei, tangerine peel, red peony, pinellia, atractylodes lancea, lindera, bitter orange, notopterygium, and coptis and scutellaria both wine-fried, 1 don each; ginseng, chuanxiong, platycodon and saposhnikovia, 8 fun each; angelica dahurica, 7 fun; honey-roasted licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, divide into two packets, add five slices of ginger and decoct in water. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The right-sided half of the pair, and the two formulas differ exactly as the theory requires: where the left-side formula leads with peony and tangkuei and adds peach kernel and safflower, this one leads with the two atractylodes and adds lindera, bitter orange and platycodon. Qi and damp rather than blood and stasis. Both keep the wine-fried coptis and scutellaria, which is the Hoechun's habitual insurance against a formula running hot. As with its companion, the lateralization does not hold, but the two prescriptions between them cover the flaccid and the spastic presentations, and a practitioner could choose on that basis instead. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
