踈風順氣湯

Translation

Treats wind stroke with hemiplegia, or the whole body unable to be moved, arising from vacuity and weakness of the original qi compounded by excess of wine and sex, with an external evil further attached. Ginseng, saposhnikovia, ephedra, notopterygium, cimicifuga, platycodon, gypsum, scutellaria, schizonepeta spike, gastrodia, arisaema, mint, pueraria, peony, apricot kernel, tangkuei, chuanxiong, atractylodes, asarum and gleditsia pod, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger, decoct in water, then add half a cup of bamboo sap and take. Externally, moxa the wind points with mugwort; a slight sweat comes and there is recovery. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one formula in the section that prescribes acupuncture alongside the draught, and the only one whose aetiology names the patient's habits: vacuity of the original qi compounded by excess of wine and sex, with an external wind on top. Twenty drugs at five fun each is a thin decoction, and the Jeongjeon clearly intends the moxibustion to do half the work. The endpoint is set the same way Seongbu-san sets it — a slight sweat — but here the sweating is to be slight, which is the safer instruction of the two. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
