Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治左右癱瘓, 此氣血太虛也. 黃芪(蜜炒)ㆍ人參ㆍ白朮ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ當歸(酒洗)ㆍ川芎ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ熟地黃 各七分, 烏藥ㆍ牛膝(酒洗)ㆍ杜衝(酒炒)ㆍ木瓜ㆍ防風ㆍ羌活ㆍ獨活ㆍ薏苡仁 各五分, 附子(炮)ㆍ沉香ㆍ木香ㆍ肉桂ㆍ甘草 各三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑 三片, 棗 二枚, 水煎服. 《回春》

Translation

Treats paralysis on both the left and the right, this being great vacuity of qi and blood. Honey-fried astragalus, ginseng, atractylodes, poria, wine-washed tangkuei, chuanxiong, white peony and cooked rehmannia, 7 fun each; lindera, wine-washed achyranthes, wine-fried eucommia, chaenomeles, saposhnikovia, notopterygium, pubescent angelica and coix, 5 fun each; blast-fried aconite, aquilaria, costus, cassia bark and licorice, 3 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The third of the Hoechun's trio, for the case the first two do not cover: paralysis on both sides, which the author reads straightforwardly as qi and blood both exhausted. The core is the eight-substance decoction, and onto it are grafted the sinew-and-bone drugs — eucommia, achyranthes, chaenomeles, coix — and a small warming aromatic tail. Twenty-three drugs at seven fun and below is a weak decoction by design; this is a medicine for months of convalescence, not for an episode.
