Translation

Treats deafness caused by kidney vacuity, and one of under ten years' standing is healed at a single dose. Scorpion 49, tails removed, washed and baked to remove the wind heat; fresh ginger cut into 49 slices the size of the scorpions to open the phlegm. Fry the two dry in a silver or stone vessel and powder finely; eat nothing that evening, and at bedtime stir it into wine as a single dose, drinking it slowly and to the full from the second watch on. At the fifth watch a sound like frogs and reed pipes is heard in the ear, and from then on one hears. — Samin 三因 (Donguibogam · I)

Clinical commentary 臨床

五更耳中聞蝦蟇笙響 — at the fifth watch a sound of frogs and pipes in the ear. Two ingredients, each with its reason given in the text, taken through the night, and the sound is the sign that it is working. **Contains scorpion, which is toxic.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
