Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治中濕諸證. 附子(炮) 二錢, 白朮ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ甘草(炒) 各一錢半. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑七棗二, 水煎服. 日再纔見身痺, 三服後則當如冒狀, 勿怪. 盖朮附幷行皮中, 逐水氣故爾. 《得效》

Translation

Treats all patterns of damp struck in. Aconite (blast-fried) 2 don; white atractylodes, red poria and licorice (stir-fried) 1.5 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add 7 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water and take. Twice a day; a numbness of the body appears at first, and after three doses there will be a clouded feeling as though the head were covered — do not be alarmed. For atractylodes and aconite travel together through the skin and drive out the water qi, and that is why.

Clinical commentary 臨床

The source warns the practitioner about the medicine's own effects and explains them: numbness first, then after three doses a clouded, muffled sensation — 如冒狀, as though the head were covered — and neither is to alarm. That is a description of aconite's known action. Perioral and limb numbness followed by a dulled sensorium is exactly what aconitine produces, and the tradition read it as the sign that the medicine had reached the skin. **Contains aconite.
