Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治咳喘上氣ㆍ痰涎不利. 半夏二錢, 桔梗ㆍ陳皮ㆍ靑皮ㆍ人參ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ紫蘇葉ㆍ杏仁ㆍ五味子各一錢, 甘草五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三, 水煎服. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats cough and panting with qi rising and phlegm drool that will not come away. Pinellia, 2 don; platycodon, tangerine peel, unripe tangerine peel, ginseng, mulberry root bark, perilla leaf, apricot kernel and schisandra, 1 don each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, and decoct in water. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A balanced formula and the most usable of the 痰喘 group: pinellia at double weight for the phlegm, the two tangerine peels and platycodon to move the qi, ginseng and schisandra to hold it, mulberry root bark to cool the lung. Nothing in it is harsh, which is why it stands at the head of the section's list rather than Cheonmin-tang. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
