Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治痰喘不能卧, 一服卽安. 半夏七枚(炮, 切作四片), 南星ㆍ陳皮ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ枳殼各一錢, 皂角ㆍ甘草各一寸(並灸). 右剉, 作一貼, 入生薑五片, 水煎服. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats phlegm panting with inability to lie down, and settles it in one dose. Seven pinellia, blast-fried and cut in four; arisaema, tangerine peel, red poria and bitter orange peel, 1 don each; soap pod and licorice, 1 inch each, both honey-roasted. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of fresh ginger, and decoct in water. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Cheonmin-tang with the four drugs of Ijin-tang worked into it, which makes it the gentler of the pair and the one for a patient who has to sit up to breathe. 不能卧 — unable to lie down — is orthopnoea, and in a patient with copious sputum it points to heart failure as readily as to lung disease. **Contains pinellia and arisaema, both toxic in the raw state and requiring proper processing, and soap pod, an irritant saponin drug.
