Yin Dawn Decoction

Eumdan-tang

한글 음단탕  ·  Pinyin Yin Dan Tang

陰旦湯

The counterpart to 陽旦湯; the scutellaria is retained from that formula and dried ginger added, so the two cooling and warming drugs stand at equal weight.

Translation

Treats the yin pattern of cold damage, with the body greatly hot and wishing to come near clothing — this is cold within and heat without. Cinnamon twig, 2 don; scutellaria and dried ginger, 1 don 5 fun each; peony and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add two jujubes and decoct in water. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Cold within and heat without, stated outright, and the formula keeps the scutellaria of its yang counterpart while adding dried ginger at the same weight — which is the tradition's way of treating a contradiction rather than choosing a side. A patient who is febrile and yet wants more covering is the one modern medicine would call peripherally shut down, and warming him while still addressing the fever is not a bad instinct. Of the chapter's many true-and-false heat formulas this is the most economical. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
