Translation

Treats the pattern of yin exuberance blocking the yang. One aconite root, blast-fried and then buried in cold ash for about half an hour; take it out, cut half of it fine, add 1 don of winter tea and 1 cup of water, boil down to 6 fun, strain, stir in half a spoon of boiled honey and take cold. After a while the agitation stops and he sleeps, and with the sweating there is recovery. Another version: one aconite root calcined with the nature retained, buried in cold ash and powdered, with 2 don of winter tea added, divided into two packets; take one packet with 1 cup of water and half a spoon of honey, decoct together and take cold — this is called Heungnyong-san. — Uihak Immun 入門 · Dongwon Boggam 寶鑑 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Aconite given cold, with tea and honey, to a patient who is agitated — and every part of that is deliberate. Yin exuberance blocking the yang means the patient looks hot and is cold, so he needs aconite; but he will not keep down anything warm, so the decoction is cooled and sweetened and the aconite itself is buried in cold ash after frying. Tea is the one drug in the pharmacy that reads as both bitter-cold and descending, and it is here to carry the aconite past a stomach that would reject it. The endpoint — the agitation stops and he sleeps — is the right one to watch for. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
