Return the Yang to Its Root Decoction

Hoeyang-banbon-tang

한글 회양반본탕  ·  Pinyin Hui Yang Fan Ben Tang

回陽返本湯

Decocted in clay water rather than plain water. The conditional addition of scallion white and coptis for a red face follows the same logic as the pig bile of 通脉四逆湯.

Translation

Treats yin exuberance blocking the yang. Blast-fried aconite, blast-fried dried ginger, ginseng, tangerine peel, ophiopogon, schisandra, honey-roasted licorice and winter tea, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in 2 cups of clear clay water; strain, stir in five spoons of honey, mix and take cold, the measure of effect being the sweating. Where the face is red, add seven stalks of scallion white and a little coptis and decoct together. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The fullest treatment of the chapter's hardest problem: a patient who is burning on the outside and cold at the core. Aconite, ginger and ginseng restore the yang; ophiopogon and schisandra hold the fluid that the false heat is driving off; tea and clay water and honey make the whole cold enough to be swallowed; and for a red face, scallion white and a pinch of coptis to draw the risen yang back down. Twelve components, every one of them answering a part of the contradiction. It is the most intelligent formula in the yin-yang blocking sections and still the clearest demonstration of what this tradition meant by treating true cold through false heat. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
