Translation

Red poria and alisma 2 don each; tangerine peel, mulberry root bark, white atractylodes and costus 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. Xu Luzhai, having been damaged by long rain, had oedema of the limbs and body, loose stool, abdominal distension with rumbling and intermittent pain, reduced appetite, and a pulse wiry, fine and moderate. This was spleen and stomach vacuity with exuberant damp qi. He first took Pyeongwi-san with white atractylodes, red poria and tsaoko added, and all the patterns resolved; only oedema of the four limbs remained, and using this medicine he recovered entirely. — Uihak Balmyeong 寶鑑 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Six medicinals and a case history, which is unusual for this chapter — most entries give only the indication. The sequence recorded is the point: the general pattern was cleared first with Pyeongwi-san modified, and only the residual limb oedema was treated with this formula. That is the chapter's principle at 2.5 applied in practice, where the root is addressed before the water. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
