Translation

For water swelling that has arisen as a change from another disease, with floating vacuity. Areca husk, poria peel, ginger peel, mulberry root bark and tangerine peel 1.5 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five peels, equal weight, and the design principle is in the choice: the outer layer of a plant is held to act on the outer layer of the body, so a formula made entirely of peels treats water lying in the skin and flesh. It is the mildest prescription in the section and the one the chapter names at 2.13 for oedema following malaria or dysentery, and at 2.9 for swelling in pregnancy. Poria peel and ginger peel are registered separately from poria and ginger for exactly this reason — the peel drains where the flesh of the root warms or supplements. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
