Translation

Treats swelling and distension with hasty panting. Platycodon, red poria, tangerine peel, mulberry root bark, areca husk, bitter orange, fermented pinellia, perilla seed (stir-fried) and perilla leaf 1 don each; tsaoko and licorice 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Named for dividing the qi rather than draining the water, and the composition follows: platycodon opens the lung above, areca husk and bitter orange move below, and perilla seed and leaf work at both ends. Only poria and mulberry root bark drain directly. The reasoning is that swelling with panting is water held up by qi that will not move, so the qi is divided and the water follows. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
