Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

孕婦臨月, 服二十餘貼, 易産無病. 大腹皮(酒洗) 二錢, 甘草(灸) 一錢半, 當歸ㆍ白朮ㆍ白芍藥各一錢, 人參ㆍ陳皮ㆍ紫蘇葉ㆍ枳殼ㆍ縮砂(硏) 各五分. 右剉作一貼, 入靑葱五葉, 水煎服. 或以煎水呑下益母丸, 尤佳. 一名縮胎飮. 《丹心》

Translation

A pregnant woman in the month of delivery, taking twenty or more packets, has an easy birth and no illness. Areca husk (wine-washed) 2 don; licorice (mix-fried) 1 don 5 pun; angelica, white atractylodes and white peony 1 don each; ginseng, tangerine peel, perilla leaf, bitter orange and amomum (ground) 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add five green scallion leaves, decoct in water and take. Or take Motherwort Pill down with the decoction, which is better still. Clinical commentary 臨床

達生 is from the Shijing — 先生如達, the firstborn came as easily as a lamb — and the name is a wish for an uncomplicated birth. The formula is a qi-mover with a light supplementing base, and the reasoning behind this whole section is that a foetus grown too large or a mother too replete makes labour hard. What it aims at is not shrinking the child but keeping the qi moving so the passage opens. Twenty or more packets in the last month is a substantial course. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
