Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

孕婦八九箇月用之, 縮胎易産. 黃芩<span class='sochu'>夏一兩, 春秋七錢, 冬五錢, 炒</span>ㆍ赤茯苓七錢半, 白朮二兩, 陳皮三兩. 右爲末, 粥丸梧子大, 白湯下五七十丸. 《丹心》

Translation

Used by a pregnant woman in the eighth and ninth months, it contracts the foetus and eases delivery. Scutellaria <span class='sochu'>1 nyang in summer, 7 don in spring and autumn, 5 don in winter, stir-fried</span>, red poria 7 don 5 pun, white atractylodes 2 nyang, tangerine peel 3 nyang. Powder them, make congee pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty to seventy down with plain hot water. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The scutellaria dose changes with the season and nothing else does — twice as much in summer as in winter. Scutellaria is the tradition's standing medicinal for quieting the foetus, and its coldness is adjusted to the weather so the effect stays even through the year. The same seasonal adjustment appears in the Dampness chapter's steeping times and in the Vomiting chapter at To 6.8.2, but here it is applied to a dose rather than to a process. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
