Donguibogam

Translation

Treats the eyes red and swollen with an obstructing screen breeding. Borax 3 don; borneol 1 don; mirabilite 5 don. Grind them together very fine; take a little each time, put it on the tongue, and let the saliva carry it into the eye; close the eye a moment, then open it, and the tears running is the sign of effect. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The delivery is the oddity: the powder goes on the tongue and the saliva carries it to the eye. Three salts and nothing oily — borax, borneol and mirabilite are all hygroscopic, and what they do on contact is draw water, which is why the tears are taken as proof. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
