Agarwood and Pinellia Decoction

Chimhyang-banha-tang

한글 침향반하탕  ·  Pinyin Chen Xiang Ban Xia Tang

沉香半夏湯

沉香與附子等分 — the agarwood is weighed against the aconite rather than given an absolute amount, since one aconite root varies. Both are converted here at 1 nyang.

Translation

Treats wind stroke with exuberant phlegm; removes phlegm, wakens the spleen, harmonizes the qi and benefits the heart. One blast-fried aconite root; agarwood, equal in weight to the aconite; ginseng, 5 don; processed pinellia, 2 don; blast-fried arisaema, 1 don. Make a coarse powder; for each dose take 3 don with 2 cups of water and ten slices of ginger, boil down to 1 cup and take on an empty stomach. — Jasaeng Gyeonghyobang 資生 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs and all of them warming, which marks it off from the cooling phlegm formulas that surround it. Agarwood weighed against the aconite is the striking instruction: a costly aromatic at the same weight as the chief warming drug, so that the yang being added is also moved downward rather than left to rise. Ginseng at five don holds the middle. The stated aims — wakening the spleen and benefiting the heart — point at the patient whose phlegm comes of a cold weak digestion rather than of heat, and for that case this is a better-reasoned formula than its neighbours. Aconite and arisaema are both toxic and are processed here, which is the minimum. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
