Clinical commentary 臨床

The red of the name is the cinnabar, a full nyang of it ground separately, matched by a nyang of roasted chuanwu aconite; then trichosanthes root, asarum, rhododendron flower, roasted ginger and stir-fried white atractylodes. Five fun in warm wine at a dose, doubled if the first does not work. Unlike the amulets and fumigants it sits among, this one is swallowed, and it is a sweating formula: aconite and dried ginger drive the sweat, asarum and rhododendron open the exterior, and the trichosanthes root is the one drug in it that answers the heat and the thirst. The sweat is the stated endpoint, which puts it in the same tradition as the cold-damage sweating powders rather than with the warding charms, and the chapter has placed it here only because it carries the word 辟 in its indication. **Contains cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide, chuanwu aconite, which is cardiotoxic, and rhododendron flower, which is a grayanotoxin-bearing plant. All three are swallowed in this formula and it must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
