Gardenia and Aconite Decoction

Chibu-tang

한글 치부탕  ·  Pinyin Zhi Fu Tang

梔附湯

The Gangmok's explanatory line names the aconite 川烏 although the composition specifies 附子; the Bogam carries both readings without reconciling them.

Translation

Robs mounting of its pain and stops it. Forty-nine gardenia fruits burnt half through; one large aconite accessory root, blast-fried until done. Cut them up and take 2 don, boiled in a jan of water and half a jan of wine down to seven tenths; strain, add a pinch of salt, and take warm. The aconite treats the cold binding from outside, and the gardenia the heat constrained within. Also called the Sudden Emergency Powder. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Jeoneum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two medicinals, one hot and one cold, and the chapter's whole theory of mounting pain in a single pair: cold binding from outside over heat constrained within, so both are met at once. The method is what makes it a robbing formula — burnt gardenia and blast-fried aconite in water and wine, strained, salted, drunk warm, and quick. **Contains aconite accessory root, which is toxic. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
