Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治癲癎驚狂一切怪證, 專治痰火. 大黃(酒蒸)ㆍ黃芩各四兩, 靑礞石(同焰硝煆如金色)ㆍ犀角ㆍ皂角ㆍ朱砂(水飛) 各五錢, 沉香二錢半, 麝香五分. 右爲末, 水和作丸梧子大, 朱砂爲衣, 溫水下七十丸. 《回春》

Translation

Treats withdrawal-epilepsy, fright and mania and every strange sign; it treats phlegm fire above all. Rhubarb (steamed in wine) and scutellaria, 4 nyang each; chlorite schist (calcined with saltpetre to a golden colour), rhinoceros horn, gleditsia pod and cinnabar (water-ground), 5 don each; aquilaria, 2 don 5 fun; musk, 5 fun. Powder them, make pills the size of a firmiana seed with water, coat with cinnabar, and take seventy with warm water. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Rhinoceros horn and musk are from protected species, aquilaria is CITES-listed, and the cinnabar is both in the pill and on its coat. The purgative core — wine-steamed rhubarb and scutellaria at 4 nyang each with chlorite schist — is 滾痰丸 enlarged, and it is what 5.14 means by 宜乎下, precipitation for mania.
