Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治外腎冷, 前陰痿, 陰囊濕痒. 柴胡ㆍ酒黃栢ㆍ生甘草各一錢, 升麻ㆍ澤瀉各七分半, 當歸梢ㆍ羌活ㆍ麻黃根ㆍ防己ㆍ草龍膽ㆍ赤茯苓各五分, 紅花一分, 五味子九粒. 右剉作一貼, 水煎服. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats the outer kidney cold, the anterior yin wilting, and the scrotum damp and itching. Bupleurum, wine-processed phellodendron and raw licorice 1 don each; cimicifuga and alisma 7 pun 5 ri each; the tips of Korean angelica, notopterygium, ephedra root, sinomenium, gentian and red poria 5 pun each; carthamus 1 pun; nine schisandra seeds. Clinical commentary 臨床

A Li Dongyuan formula, and it reads like one: thirteen medicinals in tiny weights, bupleurum and cimicifuga lifting while alisma and sinomenium drain, with ephedra root to stop the local sweating that keeps the scrotum wet. Cold genitals here are not treated with heat — the cold is read as damp-heat in the liver channel obstructing the yang, so the formula clears and drains instead. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
