Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風熱. 當歸ㆍ白朮ㆍ白芍藥各一錢, 川芎ㆍ羌活ㆍ半夏ㆍ生地黃ㆍ白殭蚕各八分, 蟬殼ㆍ赤茯苓各六分, 防風ㆍ甘菊ㆍ枳殼ㆍ陳皮ㆍ荊芥ㆍ升麻ㆍ黃連ㆍ梔子各五分, 甘草三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 棗二枚, 水煎服. 《醫林》

Translation

Treats wind heat. Tangkuei, atractylodes and white peony, 1 don each; chuanxiong, notopterygium, pinellia, raw rehmannia and silkworm, 8 fun each; cicada moulting and red poria, 6 fun each; saposhnikovia, chrysanthemum, bitter orange, tangerine peel, schizonepeta, cimicifuga, coptis and gardenia, 5 fun each; licorice, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Uirim Jipyo 醫林 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The gentlest of the four wind-heat formulas and the only one with no purgative in it at all. Tangkuei, peony and rehmannia lead, which makes it a blood formula first; silkworm, cicada moulting and chrysanthemum are the light surface-dispersing group; and coptis and gardenia alone carry the heat-clearing. Silkworm and cicada moulting together are the pair the tradition uses for itching and rash, and the formula reads more like a prescription for chronic urticaria than for anything in the brain — which may be why it comes from the Yilin rather than from one of the stroke texts. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
