Clinical commentary 臨床

A dusting powder of ten drugs for a syphilitic sore that has opened and is sloughing. Frankincense, myrrh and dragon's blood are the resins this chapter reaches for whenever flesh has to be brought back over an ulcer; catechu and calcined alum are astringents that dry a weeping surface; and the working end of the formula is the mineral trio of calomel, realgar and blue vitriol, with musk to carry it. The pig's bile wash before the dusting is a real cleansing step and the one part of the procedure with a defensible rationale. 天疱瘡, which the chapter also calls 楊梅瘡, is syphilis, and the Bogam says plainly that it passes 因男女房室傳染, by sexual contact. The ulcerated stage this powder is for is late disease, and no topical agent touches the underlying infection. **Contains calomel (mercury), realgar (arsenic sulfide) and blue vitriol (copper sulfate), all three absorbed through an open sore, and musk from a CITES-protected animal. Applying mercury and arsenic to a large ulcerated surface is a route to systemic poisoning. This must not be prepared or applied.** Syphilis at any stage is curable with penicillin. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
