Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風濕熱痛風. 蒼朮四兩, 黃栢三錢, 柴胡ㆍ升麻ㆍ藁本ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ羌活ㆍ白朮各五分, 紅花二分. 右剉, 先以水二椀, 煮蒼朮至二鍾, 去渣, 入餘藥, 再煎至一鍾, 去渣服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats painful wind of wind damp and heat. Atractylodes lancea, 4 nyang; phellodendron, 3 don; bupleurum, cimicifuga, ligusticum sinense, alisma, notopterygium and atractylodes, 5 fun each; safflower, 2 fun. Cut up; first boil the atractylodes lancea in 2 bowls of water down to 2 jong, strain, add the remaining drugs and boil again down to 1 jong, strain and take. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four nyang of atractylodes lancea against a few fun of everything else, and the two-stage boil is the formula's whole idea: the atractylodes is reduced on its own first and the remaining drugs are then cooked in that liquor, so the small quantities ride on a concentrated base. That is a real pharmaceutical technique and the name records it. Phellodendron at three don is the heat-clearing component and two fun of safflower the blood-moving one — which is to say the formula is overwhelmingly a damp-drying prescription with gestures toward the other mechanisms. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
