Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治內障ㆍ靑盲. 白羯羊肝 只用子肝一具, 薄切, 新瓦上焙; 熟地黃 一兩半, 菟絲子ㆍ決明子ㆍ車前子ㆍ地膚子ㆍ五味子ㆍ枸杞子ㆍ茺蔚子ㆍ苦葶藶子ㆍ靑箱子ㆍ蕤仁ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ防風ㆍ黃芩ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ桂心ㆍ杏仁ㆍ細辛 各一兩. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 溫水下三五十丸, 日三服. ○一人患內障失明, 得服此藥, 一夕燈下語家人曰, 適偶有所見, 如隔門隙見火者. 及朝視之, 眼中瞖膜俱裂如線, 遂得差. 爲末茶淸點服二錢亦驗. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats internal obstruction and blue blindness. One wether's liver only, thinly sliced and dried on a new tile over a low fire; prepared rehmannia 1 nyang 5 don; cuscuta, cassia seed, plantago seed, broomcorn seed, schisandra, lycium fruit, leonurus seed, bitter pepperweed seed, celosia seed, prinsepia seed, ophiopogon, alisma, saposhnikovia, scutellaria, poria, cinnamon heart, apricot kernel and asarum 1 nyang each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take thirty to fifty down with warm water, three times a day. A man suffering internal obstruction had lost his sight; having taken this medicine, one evening under the lamp he said to his household: just now I happened to see something, like firelight seen through a crack in a door. And when they looked at his eyes in the morning, the screens in them had all split like threads, and so he was cured. Clinical commentary 臨床

Nineteen medicinals and eight of them seeds — the chapter's fullest statement of the seed-for-the-pupil idea, built on a sheep's liver dried on a tile. The case that closes it is the best-told in the chapter: firelight through a crack in a door, and the screens split like threads by morning.
