Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治眼目諸疾, 及障瞖ㆍ靑盲. 黃連另爲末, 白羊子肝一具去膜, 砂盆內同硏細, 衆手作丸如梧子大, 空心溫水下三十丸, 連作五劑差. 靑羊肝尤佳. ○有一官活出一死囚, 其囚數年病死. 官人得內障甚苦, 獨坐憂嘆, 聞階除窸窣聲, 問爲誰, 曰我昔所活囚也, 今公得疾, 故感而來告, 遂傳此方, 服之果愈. 《局方》

Translation

Treats all the eye diseases, and screens, obstruction and blue blindness. Powder coptis separately; take one whole white sheep's liver, remove the membrane, and grind it fine with the coptis in a stone mortar; make pills the size of parasol-tree seeds with many hands at once, and take thirty on an empty stomach with warm water. Five courses one after another and it is cured. A goat's liver is better still. There was an official who got a condemned man released from death, and some years later the man fell ill and died. The official then developed an internal obstruction and suffered greatly; sitting alone and sighing, he heard a rustling on the steps and asked who was there. The voice said: I am the prisoner whose life you once saved; now that you have fallen ill I was moved to come and tell you. And so this formula was handed down, and taking it he was indeed cured. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two ingredients and a ghost story, and the Bogam prints the story because that is how the formula came down. Liver for the liver is the whole logic, with coptis to take the heat; the instruction to roll the pills with many hands at once is practical — a liver paste will not hold its shape long.
