Translation

Treats the phlegm cough of drink, and long-standing cough from accumulated phlegm lodged in the lung duct, sticky as glue, with the qi neither rising nor falling. Cyperus, dry-fried silkworm, clam shell powder, trichosanthes seed, wasp nest, apricot kernel and medicated leaven, in equal parts. Grind to a powder and make pills the size of a cherry with ginger juice and bamboo sap worked into honey; let them dissolve in the mouth and be swallowed. ○ One formula has no cyperus and has madder root instead. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 · Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

粘滯如膠 — sticky as glue — is the chapter's description of the sputum of a long-standing cough, and the formula is assembled against that one property: clam shell powder and trichosanthes seed to thin it, silkworm and wasp nest as the 蟲 drugs that the tradition reaches for when something will not shift, leaven for the stagnation. The pill is a cherry-sized lozenge dissolved in the mouth, which puts the drugs on the throat rather than in the stomach. Sputum that cannot be cleared and a cough of years is the picture of bronchiectasis or chronic bronchitis; what moves such sputum now is hydration, physiotherapy and treatment of the infection. **Wasp nest can provoke allergic reactions in those sensitive to stings.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
