Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

人參 四兩, 山藥(蒸熟去皮)ㆍ芡仁(蒸)ㆍ蓮肉ㆍ棗肉ㆍ杏仁ㆍ胡桃肉 各一斤, 沈香 三錢(另爲末). 已上俱擣爛. 煉蜜 三斤, 眞酥油 一斤, 和蜜蒸化. 右將前八味和成一處, 磨極細末, 入酥蜜內攪勻如膏, 盛磁器內封口. 淸晨用白湯調數匙服, 臨臥又一服. 大補眞元, 功不能盡述. 《回春》

Translation

Ginseng 4 nyang; dioscorea (steamed through and skinned), euryale seed (steamed), lotus seed, jujube flesh, apricot kernel and walnut flesh 1 geun each; aloeswood 3 don, powdered separately. Pound all the above to a pulp. Refined honey 3 geun and true clarified butter 1 geun, steamed together until melted. Combine the eight foregoing substances in one place, grind to a very fine powder, stir into the butter and honey until even like a paste, and store in a porcelain vessel sealed at the mouth. Early in the morning take several spoonfuls stirred into plain hot water, and again one dose at bedtime. It greatly supplements the true origin; its merits cannot be told in full. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Naesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The first of the section's paste and cake preparations, and the type is worth noting: this is food rather than medicine. Seven of the ten ingredients are edible in quantity — dioscorea, euryale, lotus seed, jujube, apricot kernel, walnut — and the vehicle is three geun of honey with a geun of clarified butter. 眞酥油, true clarified butter, is unusual in the Korean formulary and points to the northern origin of the source. A paste taken by the spoonful morning and night, kept in a sealed jar, is a daily food for the depleted rather than a course of treatment. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
