Flying Dragon Snatch-Back-Life Elixir

Biryongtalmyeong-dan

한글 비룡탈명단  ·  Pinyin Fei Long Duo Ming Dan

飛龍奪命丹

The Donguibogam uses this name twice. The 淵然眞人奪命丹 leaf earlier in this chapter carries an 醫鑑 note giving 飛龍奪命丹 as another name for that formula, and the 1.12 癰疽通治藥 list calls the name up again by reference; the leaf registered here is the 丹心 formula in the 疔疽 section, which is a different composition and is the only one in the chapter with a text of its own. 鵬砂 is the transcription's form for borax and is registered under 硼砂; 砒礵 and 䃃砂 are the forms both the transcription and the corpus print. 趐 for the wings of the cantharides, 凉 for the cold water and 噙 for holding the pill on the tongue are printed as the transcription has them. The interlinear notes (去足趐) and (去皮油) are set in parentheses. The twelve cantharides, the twelve croton seeds and the toad-venom juice that binds the pills carry no gram figures, and 飯粘紙, the rice-pasted paper that seals the wound, is apparatus rather than an ingredient.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Fourteen drugs, of which cinnabar, arsenic, minium, croton seed, cantharides, toad venom, arisaema and pinellia are poisons, and the dispensing is the most intricate of the 疔 formulas. The whole batch is rolled into red-bean pills; one fifth of them is taken back, strengthened with four more cantharides and re-rolled into a wheat-grain stick for the wound, and the other four fifths are kept to be held on the tongue and swallowed with cold water. The same medicine therefore goes in at both ends of the problem — into the sore and into the patient. That double route is what makes this leaf worth reading against the sticks beside it. 回瘡錠子, 碧霞錠子 and 回瘡蟾酥錠子 are local only; this one treats the 疔 as a systemic poisoning as well, which is what the chapter means when it writes 毒氣攻心, the toxic qi attacking the heart. A severe furuncle with spreading cellulitis and fever is indeed a systemic illness, and the reading is not foolish. **Contains cinnabar, a mercury sulfide; arsenic, a systemic poison and carcinogen; minium, which is lead tetroxide; croton seed and cantharides, both violent vesicants, cantharidin also being a renal toxin; toad venom, which contains cardiac-glycoside bufadienolides; and raw arisaema and pinellia. Musk is a CITES-protected material. This must not be prepared or taken, and no substitution makes it safe.** Three heavy metals and a cardiac glycoside swallowed in sequence, with more of the same left inside a sealed wound, is a regimen that could kill a patient faster than the sore. The condition it is for is treated now by drainage and systemic antibiotics. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
